choeae

최애 (choeae): the Korean word for your bias

최애 (choeae) means your number-one favorite, like an idol's "bias." It's a real dictionary word built from two Hanja meaning "most" and "love."

💖 Meaning

Your favorite, the one you love most. In K-pop it means your favorite member of a group, what English-speaking fans call your bias.

Origin

최애 is a real Sino-Korean word, not new slang: 최 (最, “most”) + 애 (愛, “love”). Dictionaries define it as “loving the most.” Fandoms gave the old word a new everyday job.

✍️ Examples

  1. 내 최애는 막내야.
    Nae choeae-neun maknae-ya.
My bias is the youngest member.

  2. 이 노래가 이번 앨범 최애곡이야.
    I norae-ga ibeon aelbeom choeae-gok-iya.
This is my favorite song on the new album.

💡 Usage tip

Add it in front of other nouns: 최애곡 (choeae-gok, favorite song), 최애 음식 (favorite food). A 차애 (chaae) is your second favorite.
